Best Football Helmets

Over the last couple of years, safety concerns regarding football helmets and concussions have become a most pressing issue.  Safety issues in football are now ubiquitous, ranging from increased safety measures in the NFL to academics rating the best football helmets.  And now legislation is spreading across America aimed at treating student-athletes with concussions.

Football helmet manufacturers are very aware of this, which is why they have created the most innovative and advanced helmets the sport has ever seen.  Helmets have radically transformed over the last 10 years into engineering marvels.

To try and clear some things up, we at Sports Unlimited have compiled a list of what we believe are the best football helmets available on the market today. This includes both adult football helmets and youth football helmets, and it should come to no surprise that we believe the best youth football helmets are just the youth versions of the best adult football helmets. The adult and youth versions of these football helmets are nearly identical, with only slight differences in their make and/or build.  Enough though.  The best football helmets are…

Fox adds Music to NFL broadcasts

Fox Network is known to have a history with testing the boundaries.  Apparently, their NFL broadcasts are their latest test subject.  Last week, during the Seahawks-49ers broadcast, Fox experimented by playing music in between plays and during replays.  Check out the video below and listen for yourself:

They will be trying it again during the Cardinals – Panthers game this Sunday, and they haven’t ruled out using music during this year’s Super Bowl.

What are your thoughts on this – Like or dislike?  If you watched the Seahawks-Niners game from last week, what’d you think of it during the actual game?

Being an NFL purist, I’m not a big fan of this “innovation,” but I will reserve judgment until I actually watch a game with music myself.

College Football Report – Is this the year it finally happens?

It’s early November, which means the college football season is officially in serious-mode.  Every game from this point forward is immensely important, especially with teams that have BCS aspirations.  Over the last few years, non-BCS schools (i.e. Boise State, Utah, TCU) have gotten oh so close to making it to the BCS Championship Game, but each time they inevitably fell short.  There was always a marquee name in their way, whether that be Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, Oklahoma, or Texas, that just pushed those non-AQ schools to the side. But something is different this year.

This year, the mighty may have not completely fallen, but they’ve bled.  Texas has been out of the conversation for a month.  USC, who was already disqualified from a bowl this year, is 5-3.  Alabama lost to South Carolina.  Florida is a shell of its recent self.  Oklahoma lost to Missouri. Halloween Gifts: Part 2 – NFL/NCAA Youth Helmet and Uniform Set by Franklin

In part two of our out-of-control Halloween gift posts bonanza, we dive deep into the core fabric of what makes Halloween great: costumes.  What would Halloween be without the costumes?  Without the costumes, it would just be a day when a bunch of kids go door-to-door asking for candy.  Pretty much, Halloween would be about underage door-to-door candy beggars.

Instead, Halloween is awesome.  On Halloween, you (note: Halloween may be centered on kids, but you get to have some fun too, right?) get to dress up and pretend to be someone or something else.  Yeah, pirates are cool.  And, ok, dressing up like a vampire is “in” right now.  But let’s be honest: dressing up like a pro or college football player is by far the coolest!

The NFL Youth Helmet and Uniform Sets by Franklin let your child live the dream (ok, kind of) that they play for their favorite football team!  It comes with the team’s jersey, pants, helmet, along with a chinstrap, integrated removable shoulder pad inserts, and adhesive/iron-on numbers to apply to the jersey!

And if they’d rather sport a college uni, check out the NCAA Youth Helmet and Uniform Sets by Franklin.

NFL Power Rankings – Week 4

Now that we’re three games deep into the NFL regular season, it’s fair to say that it’s time for a Power Ranking to figure out which teams have taken charge and which teams might as well go back to the drawing board.  Some teams are separating themselves from the pack (for better or worse), while others are still in that awkward middle ground.  We’ll try and clear things up with our “expert” opinions.

Cream of the Crop (so far)

1. Pittsburgh Steelers 3-0 – That’s right.  No QB, no problem.  Their defense is playing at an all-world level, averaging 11 points per game against Atlanta, Tennessee, and Tampa Bay.  Add a potent rushing attack with Mendenhall and you have a scary team that will only get better with the addition of Roethlisberger (sp?) in a couple weeks.  I hate to say it, but be afraid, NFL.  Not that most people aren’t already a little scared of Ben anyway…

2.  Indianapolis Colts 2-1 – With Peyton in charge, the Colts are a steady team that will be sure to take 11-13 wins.  They seem just fine after a week 1 loss to Houston.

3. Atlanta Falcons 2-1 – After a difficult Week 1 OT loss to Pittsburgh, Atlanta has showed its mettle with an overpowering win against Arizona and an OT win against the defending Super Bowl champion Saints in Week 3.  The next two games are very serviceable, with match-ups against 0-3 SF and 0-3 Cleveland.  They’ll be 4-1 in 2 weeks.

4. New Orleans 2-1 – The Saints are fine, for now.  Despite losing this past weekend in OT, they should be fine with Drew Brees at the helm.  But the last place rushing attack has to be of concern.  However, don’t panic yet: their next four games are against Carolina, Arizona, Tampa Bay, and Cleveland – all very winnable.  Expect to see them at 6-1.

5. Chicago Bears 3-0 – The Bears are the last unbeaten in the NFC, and have impressive W’s against Dallas and Green Bay.  All three games, including a Week 1 win against Detroit, were hotly contested and decided by a single score, so don’t get too high on them, yet.  But a fantastic start for Chicago, nonetheless. The NFL is BACK!!

Tomorrow, the wait finally ends.  Football is back and all is well in the world!  Thursday, The Minnesota Vikings travel to New Orleans in a rematch of January’s epic NFC Championship Game. To refresh your memory, the Vikings dominated play, but self-induced wounds (fumbles and interceptions) cost them dearly, especially Brett Favre’s inexcusable INT late in the fourth quarter that forced an overtime and eventually sent the Saints to Super Bowl glory.

Tomorrow, the Saints open up the 2010 season as defending champs, while the Vikings seek redemption and revenge for January’s falter.

Check out some pics from that game if your memory is still just a bit fuzzy:
