What Are the Differences Between Ski Jackets and Snowboard Jackets?

Learn the differences between ski and snowboard jackets, to find the right winter jacket for sport.

At first glance, there really aren’t any. All ski and snowboard jackets are water-proof, durable, and great in the snow…and honestly, for most people the terms are pretty interchangeable. But for serious skiers and snowboarders, there is a world of difference between snowboard and ski jackets. Put them back to back, and these disparities quickly become evident.

Traditional skiing jackets are built for mobility, comfort, and performance. They’re streamlined, sleek, lightweight, and fully featured to seal out cold air and snow.

Jacket ComparisonSki jackets are typically more fitted shells, cutting down on excess material to improve speed and aerodynamics on the mountain. Style wise, most ski jackets are simply patterned, with bright and sometimes loud color combinations. They stand out, but don’t push the envelope, focusing on performance over bold style.

Alternatively, snowboard jackets are inspired by, and aimed at skateboarders, surfers, motocross, and bmx riders. They’re designed by guys like Shaun White, and companies like Burton, Oakley, and Billabong. In other words, (and not surprisingly so) snowboard jackets are street styled for the thrill-seeking kids who would be into snowboarding! So you’ll find more edgy, artistic patterns and designs in snowboarding jackets than you’d usually find in skiing jackets. Similarly, snowboarding jackets are baggier and longer than skiing jackets, for a younger, more urban look than the streamlined, fitting, and fast performance skiing jackets offer.

Why different?

Snowboard and skiing jackets are different for two reasons; they’re aimed at different audiences, and they’re meant for different sports.

Killtec Skiing JacketSkiing comes from a racing tradition, which has always focused on speed and finesse. Thus, you get bright colors, lightweight fabrics, and shorter hems in a skiing jacket. After all, skiers need extra mobility in both of their legs for better forward and backward movement. For most skiers, style is secondary to speed, mobility, and comfort, so skiing jackets try to deliver accordingly.

On the other hand, snowboarding evolved from skateboarding and surfing…two sports that have always been closely intertwined with style, street fashion, music, and fringe art. So it should come as no shock that snowboarding jackets feature boundary-pushing patterns and colors, modern media integration, and a more youthful look to them with long, baggy styles.

Burton Mens Poacher Snowboard JacketPerformance wise, their bagginess and extra length are generally better for snowboarding as well, which is more park-oriented than racing specialized, focusing more on tricks, grinds, and grabs, than making quick runs down the mountain. Baggy jackets make it easier to move your arms and torso for tricks, and the extra length makes it more comfortable to sit on the snow in between heats.

You see the same differences in skiing and snowboarding pants. Traditional ski pants are straight hemmed, lightweight, and roomy enough to move in, but definitely designed for fast and active movement. Snowboarding pants, like snowboarding jackets, are baggy, heavier, more colorful, and lined with pockets and extras, for the more style-focused snowboarder.

What’s the same?

Snowboarding Jackets and PantsSki and snowboard jackets are interchangeable for most people because generally, they do the same things and have a lot of the same features. Most are designed with similar water-proof shells, helmet-compatible hoods, adjustable cuffs, high collars, and most importantly, snow skirts, to prevent snow and ice from getting into the jacket. They both focus on keeping you warm, dry, and comfortable in the extreme cold of the mountain, and since both types of jackets are meant for active sport, they’re both performance-oriented.
At the end of the day, the differences between these two types of winter-sports jackets are negligible for most people, especially those just starting out. But since they differ functionally and stylistically, these jackets can definitely have an effect on your comfort and performance in the powder. For instance, if you’re a skier wearing a snowboarding jacket, it’s probably going to slow you down, catching the air like a sail and holding you back. Concurrently, if you’re a snowboarder wearing a skiing jacket, it’s probably going to be too tight for you to pull off any big grabs or tricks. All-in-all, it’s important to find the right jacket for your game before heading up the mountain.

What’s New with Hoodies These Days?

Check out the latest performance and athlete-inspired hoodies from Nike, Under Armour, and Burton, to make your fall and winter more comfortable, and more active!

Not just for teenagers anymore, hooded sweatshirts (or hoodies, as anyone besides my Mom calls them), have quickly become an essential in just about everyone’s closet. The reason? They’re flat out comfortable! Made of cozy, warm, and soft cotton fleece, most people laze around in a hoody on chilly Sundays, grab one before they head out on a fall afternoon, keep one in the car or the office in case the temperature drops, or use them as a layer under a jacket when shoveling snow off the driveway. They’re as comfy as they are versatile…but at the same time, haven’t they become a little stagnant? In this new age of performance wear; moisture wicking shirts, waterproof/breathable shells, quick-drying fleece, electronically heated jackets, and alike…why are our hoodies still the same old, same old? If you read this blog often, you see where I’m going with this.

Womens HoodiesNow, thanks to the same companies (Nike and Under Armour, I’m looking at you) that updated our wardrobe with those high-performance shirts, jackets, socks, pants, and yes, even underwear, we at SU, have in stock, the latest in hoody technology! High-performance, moisture-wicking, weather-resistant, lightweight, athletically-inspired, and still super cozy women’s and mens hoodies are here, and let me tell you, they are some of the best hoodies I’ve ever worn!

Nike

KO Hoody / All Time Hoody

Nike HoodiesAvailable as pullover hoodies for men, girls, and boys, in a variety of colors and styles, the Nike KO Hoodie has been around for a few seasons, and was one of the first true “performance hoodies” on the market. The All Time Hoody and All Time Swoosh are similar performance hoodies for women, specifically designed with more feminine seams and styles.

Every Nike KO and All Time Hoody is made with their proprietary Therma-FIT microfiber fleece fabric, a combination of cotton and polyester that is lightweight, breathable, insulated, and wind-blocking, keeping you warm and protected from the elements, without weighing you down.Nike Therma-FIT The material is really comfortable and smooth to the touch, noticeably different than traditional, rougher and natural-feeling cotton fleece.

Other important features include:

  • Dri-FIT moisture wicking mesh-lined hood, perfect for regulating temperature when you get active
  • Flat-lock stitching that prevents chafing when moving
  • Athletic design and fit that is more tapered than generously cut, for a great and flattering look

Nike KO Hoodies go well with Nike KO Fleece Pants, available for girls and boys, and made of the same performance Therma-FIT and Dri-FIT materials.

Under Armour

Team Fleece Hoodies

UA Charged Storm Youth HoodieA classically styled pullover hoodie, the popular Under Armour Team Fleece Hoodie may look basic, but like every piece of Under Armour ColdGear, its design is anything but! Made of proprietary 2-Layer ArmourFleece polyester material, these sweatshirts are made to seal in heat and seal out the elements, while breathing, wicking moisture, and leaving you feeling comfortable and cozy.

  • An inner layer of brushed, soft, and comfortable polyester fleece fabric feels great against the skin and pulls sweat off the body.
  • A smooth outer layer is quick-drying and water-resistant, for a unique feel, and incredible performance.

Perfect for running, practicing, or training in cold, light rain, or snow, these loosely fit, minimally styled pullover hoodies are as comfortable as your favorite traditional cotton sweatshirt, but do so much more. Available for adults and youth.

Charged Cotton Storm Hoody

The latest and greatest addition to the world of performance hoodies, and possibly one of the best hoodies I’ve ever worn, the Under Armour Charged Cotton Storm is the first high-performance cotton hoodie that also slices through water, rain, snow, sleet, and hail like a samurai sword!

UA Charged Cotton Storm HoodieUtilizing Under Armour’s now-famous Charged Cotton material, which dries faster and wicks more moisture than any other cotton fabric out there, the Storm hoody takes it one step further, adding a DWR (that’s Durable, Water-Repellent) finish, to keep moisture out of the fabric. That means you can throw this baby on in the rain, sleet, or snow, and jog to the gym, bike to the store, or just run to the car, and come out safe (and dry) on the other side. It also means you can get as active as you want on chilly or cold days, and this hoody will wick that sweat off you, and keep you warm and dry…all with the look, the touch, the feel of cotton.

Available as a pullover or zip up hoodie, in dozens of colors, with Under Armour Charged Cotton Storm Fleece Pants to match, these water-resistant hoodies will blow you away!

Burton

Bonded Fleece Hoodie

If you’re looking for a sick snowboarding or skater hoodie to keep you warm and dry on the mountain this year, the fine people over at Burton have something really special for you. The unique and best-selling Burton Bonded Hoodie is the perfect combination of rider-inspired comfort and performance, designed with a brushed and soft interior, and a harder “shell-like” smooth outer. Performance-ready, the DryRide Thermex fleece fabric is incredibly breathable, quick-drying, and warm, with a really cool feel. That means while the rest of your friends are trying to shred powder, freezing and soaked through in their old (and quite lame) cotton sweatshirts, you’ll be cutting them up in something way above their heads.

Finding the Best Rain Jackets

Learn how to buy the right rain jacket to protect yourself from harsh conditions and storms this season.

Rain WearTypically, with the fall weather and changing seasons comes seemingly never-ending overcast days, stormy weather, and ceaseless rain that threatens to keep us miserable, pale, and stuck inside until spring comes to the rescue. Across the country, rain and snow fall are beginning to increase, and people are left wondering, “How do I protect myself from this awful weather?”

Remember when Mom used to tell you to “always wear a coat” before you’d go running off into the elements? Well, that advice is still pretty valid today! The best way to protect yourself from pouring rain, cold, and wet conditions this fall is with a great rain jacket. The problem is, these days, rain wear can drastically range in price from an affordable $12 poncho you’d wear to a ball game, to a serious $200 packable rain jackets so advanced they’d keep Bear Grylls comfortable in the middle of a rain forest. So where do you start, and how do you find the perfect rain jacket for you?

Types of Rain Jackets

To give you a better idea of which rain jacket to look for, it’s important to understand the defining characteristics and fabrics of the different types of rain jackets:

1. Fully Waterproof Jackets

North Face Venture JacketJackets with seam-taped or seam-sealed outer shells provide complete and total waterproofing, without leakage. The shell fabric repels water, and is sealed around each seam on the inside, preventing water from entering the jacket.

People who live in rainy climates, like those in the northwest coast of the U.S., frequently venture out into heavy rain, work outside, or spend a lot of time in the outdoors, should look to completely waterproof, seam-sealed womens and mens rain jackets and shells, like the Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket and The North Face Venture Jacket.

2. Waterproof / Breathable Jackets

These lightweight rain jackets are a great value, and perform well under most conditions! As their name would imply, they have a shell which seals out water on the outside, but allows moisture and water vapor to escape from the inside, keeping you comfortable and cool. They are designed with at least two layers of fabric sandwiched together; a waterproof outer shell, and a moisture wicking membrane (sometimes they’ll also feature a smooth lining). The most popular and well known of these fabrics is GORE-TEX, although fabrics from The North Face, Marmot, Patagonia, and Frogg Toggs now offer similar performance.Hyvent 2 Fabric

Waterproof/breathable jackets are perfect for frequent light to medium showers like those typically found in the northeastern U.S., and are great for people getting active in rainy conditions, such as hikers, climbers, and commuters. Check out men’s and women’s GORE-TEX rain jackets, the Columbia Watertight Rain Jacket, The North Face Resolve Jacket, and Frogg Toggs DriDucks Ultra Lite Rain Suit for serious protection.

3. Water Resistant Drizzle-Wear

Water resistant fabrics are not completely waterproof, but still provide adequate protection from rain, especially in infrequent, light showers. The outer shell of these jackets is designed to bead up moisture and rain, so it easily falls off the fabric, instead of making its way into the jacket.

Perfect for drier climates, like the southeastern U.S. or Gulf Coast, water-resistant jackets like the Columbia Glennaker Lake Rain Jacket, Columbia Switchback, or Nike Vapor Wind and Rain Jacket can double as your lightweight fall, winter, and even spring jacket, providing all-around comfort, insulation, style, and rain resistance.

Features to Look For

Rain jackets for women and men come in all shapes and sizes, with a full range of features, all designed to perform in different environments. Now that you have a better idea of which rain jacket fits your climate, the next step is to identify how you plan on using your new rain jacket. Then, it’s simply a matter of figuring out which waterproof, water-resistant, or waterproof/breathable jacket fits those needs.

Columbia Rain Jacket MensLet’s say you’re looking for a basic rain jacket to wear in every day situations, from your commute to sitting in the stands at your son’s football game. If that’s the case, you should look for a bare-bones rain jacket, made of heavier weight fabric for durability and warmth, with a couple of simple benefits:

  • Zip-in compatibility (perfect for layering, this feature lets you easily connect an insulating layer under your rain jacket to keep you warm).
  • Stow-able or Removable hood (to protect you when the rain picks up, but stay out of the way otherwise)
  • Adjustable cuffs to fit over gloves

For your needs, the Columbia Watertight Rain Jacket, The North Face Resolve, and Frogg Toggs Toadz Kikker Rain Jacket are affordable and comfortable options.

Underarm Ventilation

If you’re more of the active type, looking for a rain jacket to protect you while running, jogging, exercising, biking, or hiking, look for a completely waterproof, or waterproof / breathable jacket with a few of the following performance features:

  • Pit Zips (zippers under the arm provide additional ventilation to dump out hot air)
  • Lightweight and durable fabrics (look for Ripstop fabrics, reinforced to resist tearing)
  • Adjustable storm hoods (heavy-duty hoods protect from driving rains)
  • Packable designs (advanced compressible jackets can actually be packed into themselves, and stored away when you don’t need them)

For your more active needs, the Frogg Toggs Toadz Firebelly Rain Jacket, The North Face Various Guide Jacket, and North Face Venture Jacket are great and high-performance rain jackets, as are any GORE-TEX rain jackets. Also keep in mind that all Frogg Toggs products are designed for ultimate waterproof protection and breathability.

With this information, you should be better equipped to find the right rain jacket for you, and hopefully, this rainy season shouldn’t keep you stuck in doors. Check out Sports Unlimited for a full list of our rain gear stock, and make sure to read our rain jacket buyer’s guide for even more information! And hey, don’t forget about your feet! We carry a full selection of mens waterproof boots and womens rain boots!

Product Spotlight: The North Face Apex Bionic Softshell Jacket

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket is the perfect softshell for your fall and winter. Its windproof and water-resistant design protects you from the elements, while the fleece liner seals in the heat and keeps you cozy. Available in a wide variety of colors, for men, women, and kids, the Apex Bionic is a great option for anyone looking to enjoy the great outdoors this season, without all of the chills and runny noses that come with it.

Mens North Face Apex Bionic JacketFall is here folks, and winter is right around the corner. That means it’s time to take in the changing foliage around town, venture up to the snowy mountains with the family, and hike through beautiful wilderness with the dog. But that also means you’ve got to put up with biting winds, plummeting temperatures, and driving rain and ice that are all hell bent on giving you a runny nose, chilling you to the bone, and generally keeping you indoors. Thankfully though, there are some amazing jackets out there this season, specially designed to cut through extreme conditions and temperatures, with style and technology, to keep you moving even when things start to get nasty.

Our enduring favorite for the season, and one that a bunch of us around the office have trusted for years, has been The North Face Apex Bionic jacket. This advanced, lightweight softshell is built with a smooth, completely windproof outer layer, which they call Apex ClimaBlock, that also beads up water, for great rain-resistance. It’s a pretty low-profile, low-bulk, and stylish jacket designed with 4-way stretch in the fabric, so you can definitely move easily and never feel restricted like you do with similar lightweight jackets. It’s a great feature for active people, and also makes it incredibly versatile to wear on its own on windy days or even underneath a heavier winter coat when it really gets cold out. I wear mine on afternoon runs or bikes around Philly, and it moves perfectly.

On the inside of the Apex Bionic, The North Face put in a nice layer of micro fleece. This lining not only feels smooth and soft, but it also seals in the heat better than a jacket twice its weight! I usually wear mine over a t-shirt on most fall days, and I feel really comfortable, and maybe even a little too warm in the sun. When it gets pretty cold, I’ll throw on a thermal under my Apex Bionic, and honestly, with no cold wind getting through, and the fleece liner, I’m pretty toasty. Thankfully though, the whole jacket breathes really well, and vents out hot air, so you shouldn’t overheat or get sweaty.

Womens North Face Apex BionicIn addition to its weatherproof design, the Apex Bionic features hand warmer pockets with zippers, perfect for holding your Smartphone securely while you run, and a Napoleon chest pocket for that mp3 player. It also seals out chilly wind with adjustable Velcro cuffs and a drawcord hem, which I use a lot to control the climate inside the jacket.

More affordable than, and just as stylish, as the popular North Face Denali fleece jacket, and designed to slice through cold, wind, and rain like a Ginsu knife, the Apex Bionic is the perfect softshell for the late spring, fall and winter. Its lightweight, weatherproof, and stretchable fabric makes it great for active outings, like climbing, running, biking, hiking, skiing, and snowboarding, yet with it’s sleek style and huge variety of colors, I end up just wearing it out around the city a lot.

If you don’t happen to be a man in his late twenties like myself, you’re still in luck! The North Face Apex Bionic is available in styles for women and kids as well.

Get them a Halloween sports costume, and see their faces light up as they take on the roll of their favorite NFL, NCAA, MLB, or NHL all-star. New Football Helmet Sensor Uses Smartphone App For Instant Impact Report

Check out the new Shockbox football helmet impact sensor, designed to sync to your Smartphone, to deliver instant impact and injury reports to parents, coaches, and trainers, after ever hit.

Other than getting the win, today, most football players and parents are focused on one thing; their safety and health on the field. From the NFL to Pop Warner, players, coaches, and parents are more aware than ever of the short and long-term affects of single or multiple concussions and other brain injuries, and with research coming out everyday, it’s not surprising that players are concerned for their futures and the future of their favorite game.

Using the Shockbox Smartphone AppOver anything, I’ve found that parents and players are hungry for information! How helmets are performing, how hard their players are getting hit, how many hits they’re taking during a game, how they hold up all season long. They want to see how the game is affecting their players and children, and these days, nothing is more important than accurate information. After all, the more informed parents and coaches are, the safer their players, and the better and more effective their decisions are on game-day.

So, during the game, what if it were possible for coaches, trainers, and parents to know exactly how many hits a player took, how hard he was hit, from what direction, and if he should be checked for injuries…all on their Smartphones, and instantly after every hit took place? That kind of data would be invaluable!

Shockbox Helmet Impact SensorEnter the Shockbox Football Helmet Impact Alert Sensor; one of the most advanced, practical, informative, and long-lasting helmet sensors in the game today! Designed to install directly into the football helmet, this helmet impact sensor is built with Bluetooth and LED technology, and not only records the energy, acceleration, direction, and force of an impact, but then sends that information to any synced mobile device or laptop, where it’s easily read and displayed for parents, coaches, and trainers, immediately after the hit! Brand new to the market, we at Sports Unlimited were incredibly impressed by this technology, and are proud to be one of the first distributors of this advancement in the game! Always focused on protecting players, we’re excited to see how Shockbox helmet sensors change football for the better.

Football Helmet Impact Sensor SystemAlready used by pro wide receiver Laurent Robinson, the Shockbox is a long and thin helmet impact sensor that attaches securely to the inside of the football helmet shell, and is compatible with almost every modern helmet from Riddell, Schutt, and Xenith, except the Riddell 360. The football helmet sensor comes with a free download of a specially designed Smartphone App for your Blackberry, iPhone, or Android, and quickly syncs to any device with the touch of a button. Once synced and installed, the Shockbox will record and report any impact over 50 g of acceleration, directly to your phone, up to 325 feet away.

Helmet Sensor iPhone AppThe App itself is incredibly user friendly, and utilizes data based on over 40,000 individual sets of tests over multiple helmet types, and over 18 months of live data, to give you the most accurate information possible. Its features let you monitor the health and progress of up to 128 players (more than enough for any coach or trainer). You can easily see how many hits a player has taken during a game, a season, or a career, how hard each hit was (on a color-coded scale from light to severe), and even record and update symptoms and treatment if injuries take place.

In addition to being an all-important hit-counter, the App also includes a mini SCAT 2 concussion assessment tool, which allows you to record player symptoms, track health, and determine the likelihood of a concussion. With this data, coaches and trainers can make more informed and faster decisions to take players out of the game, and treat them if necessary.

In today’s football world, information saves lives. So stay informed, and know when a hit is too hard, with the most advanced and innovative helmet sensor system out there today; the Shockbox Alert Sensor!

How Do I Find The Best Basketball Hoop for the Money?

Learn how to find the best basketball system for your life, while staying within your budget. Narrow down your search by answering a few simple questions.

Basketball HoopWhen I was a kid, there was nothing better than walking with my older brother over to the old local elementary school playground for a game of basketball. The hoops were bent, the backboards killed the rebound, and the old metal nets rained down rust if you were lucky enough to even get the ball through. But at the time, the game and the company were all that really mattered. That was, until the day my parents surprised us with a brand new basketball hoop in our driveway. After that, life was never the same! We’d play every day on that amazing basketball hoop, and the neighborhood kids would all come to our house to shoot around. All growing up, our driveway was THE place to be.

That’s the amazing thing about basketball. It’s one of those universal sports that almost anyone can play, whether you’re a serious baller, or just a bunch of kids playing a fun game of HORSE. And a great basketball net can really make all the difference!

But for the one’s buying the new hoop (parents, I’m talking to you here), it can be a serious investment, and also a confusing venture. Typically, parents looking for a residential basketball hoop don’t even know where to begin!

To help you narrow down your decision, and have a place to start from, try answering a few questions that should give you a better idea of what to look for:

Roof- or wall-mounted residential basketball hoops are great and more affordable options when play space is limited. Typically, they bolt right onto a wall or roof, and extend out over the driveway or backyard. Most can even retract back right against the wall, to stay out of the way when not in use.

Portable basketball hoops are perfect for seasonal use in backyards, driveways, and side streets. They usually feature a weighted base, which you can fill with water or sand, and wheels to make transportation a breeze. Most feature an adjustable hoop, which you can lower to make storage simple when it gets cold out.

3. Would you like to be able to adjust the height of the hoop, or keep it at a fixed height?

Adjustable basketball hoops are great for households or neighborhoods with kids of all ages. Hand cranks, advanced internal compression systems, or traditional broom handle systems let you raise or lower the height of the hoop to fit the size or skill-level of everyone playing. If you have little ones, they can start playing with a lower hoop, and then simply raise it higher as they grow and improve! Typically adjusting from 5 or 6’ high, up to 10’ (regulation height), adjustable nets are great options to meet almost any need.Fixed height basketball hoops are good options for serious and usually older players. They are also typically more affordable than adjustable height nets.

Fixed height hoops are more simply designed, with a central pole and backboard system. They come in a variety of pole heights and gauges, and some can even be adjusted by loosening the bolts on the backboard pole, and re-attaching it at any height on the central pole.

4. What is your basketball hoop budget?

Residential basketball hoops range greatly in price, from about $200 all the way up to $2500. A huge variable in the price of a hoop is the type of pole it uses. The metal of the pole, and its width directly influence its durability and performance, whether it’s fixed or adjustable. The width of the pole can range from 3” up to 8” and should be something you definitely consider when looking for a new net. Generally, if it’s a net you’re going to use regularly, all year round, it is worth it to spend a little more for a better, and more durable pole, about 5” or 6” in width.
